I got the idea for ” 5 4 3 2 1 ” from a 1961 Benny Golson LP called ” Take a number from 1 to 10.” That recording starts with a solo sax piece, then each cut grows in musicians – duo, trio, quartet, etc. … up to a dectet. This recording starts with quintet material and then subtracts and changes instrumentation ending with a solo sax ballad. The CD features some great standards arranged by Joe Henderson and Freddie Hubbard, some of my original tunes, and a few obscure Monk tunes. I was happy to record with some wonderful Chicago musicians; Pete Benson- organ; Todd Howell – drums; Larry Bowen – trumpet; Steve Berry – trombone; Mike Schlick – drums; and Dan Delorenzo – bass. I’m playing alto, tenor and bari saxes and singing. If you like straight ahead swinging jazz, this is for you!
